MARGARET River hosted Blackwood Utd in the first round of the SWSA Knock Out Cup on Sunday.
Missing key defenders this was not going to be an easy job and the first half proved just that with both teams fighting hard for the ball–it took all of 45 minutes for Margaret River to break free from a beautifully weighted through ball by Jayden Forrest into the path of Matt Newsome who took the keeper on and beat him.
The second half saw Margaret River’s mid field stat to take dominance through Justin Davies, Will Coogan and Lee Cockburn but it was right winger Olly Fabrici who stunned the crowd with a 35 metre shot from the sideline that did the keeper up completely.
Blackwood Utd marshalled their forces and came back at River and defensive stumble let their pacy centre forward through to get one back.
Fabrici again turned up on the right hand side taking on two players only to be hacked to the ground and awarded a penalty, easily converted by Allen McLoughlin.
Blackwood came back again and scored when a miss kick from McLoughlin gifted the ball to no fewer than three Blackwood players who scored 3-2 to Margaret River with 15 minutes to go and Blackwood Utd keeping the fight up.
Matt Newsome once again stood up and took the loose ball on beating the keeper comprehensively to put Margaret River 4-2 up, then a missed kick by Geeza saw Blackwood gifted goal right on full time to finish the game at 4-3 to Football Margaret River.
Everyone played their part with solid performances from Olly Fabrici, Matt Newsome and Justin Davies, Man of the Match was Alan McLouglin.
Next week we play Blackwood Utd again at home in a league game KO 1pm.
