WITH Vasse winning the coin toss and choosing to go with the wind Margaret River knew this was going to be a hard match.

United began the game immediately with a strong pass from Glen Giles to Henry Rogers out on the right wing, unfortunately not making it past the Vasse defence which saw the ball head back down the field.

Within the first five minutes United were unfortunate to see a goal put away by a Vasse attacker taking the score to 1-0.

Declan Brennan made an excellent save from Vasse’s second attempt on goal and United were determined to get the ball up the field and take a goal.

With amazing improvement by the entire team after last week’s match a foul tackle saw the chance for United to take a goal home, Victor Cunningham dummied the ball, and drew in Vasse defence, with Trevor Armenor right behind Victor he tried his hardest to put the ball into the top right hand corner of the net which was well saved by the Vasse goal keeper.

A rough tackle by Mat Kevill allowed Vasse a free kick which was converted, but an offside call by the referee brought the ball back.

With strong defence work from Dylan Johnson, Liam Keys and Sacha Rudd, the Chooks Player of the Match, Vasse was kept at bay.

Tom Wood, working extremely hard in the back line, got the ball from Vasse and sent it up field for Nic Versteegen playing on the left wing to cross it in for an attempt on goals which was unsuccessful.

With the half time whistle blown, United were ready for a speech from their step-in coach, Steve Versteegen.

And were buoyed as the opposition coach was heard to say “all they do (United) is attack, attack, attack, they make it look easy”.

The second half started with Vasse kicking off, which saw them quickly take their second and final goal home to take the score to 2-0.

Sam Connell received a strong pass from Phil Williamson, taking the ball far up the right wing ready to cross into the box for an attempt on a goal which was unfortunately not converted and that was the final opportunity.

On behalf of the Margaret River United Team I would like to thank Steve Versteegen for stepping in as our coach while Paul has been away.
