THE proposed World Super 9 surf competition may move from October 15-25 of this year to October 2009.
This proposal has been put to the Augusta-Margaret River Shire Council for consideration at tonight’s ordinary meeting.
The council approved use of Surfers Point and five alternative venues in April for the contest on the specific dates.
Proponents Mitch Thorson and John Bradbury, who have had difficulty securing enough sponsorship in time for the event, have now asked to hold it over the same 10-day period with the same conditions next year instead.
The original proposal attracted 146 public submissions, with 109 in support and 37 objecting.
Meanwhile, the council will also consider an application to hold the Quiksilver Australian Junior National Titles at Surfers Point for seven days from November 30 to December 7 this year.
Shire staff recommend the council approve the event subject to conditions, including that access to the Point be maintained for recreational surfers and visitors when the Titles are not using the area.
