INSPIRED by the impending birth of her first grandchild, local Child and Family Community nurse Sandra Robertson has published A Pocket Book of Parenting Babies.
Ms Robertson, who has worked with families for more than 10 years, began the book late last year as a “short and sweet” guide to the first year of parenting for first time parents.
“I wanted to help from a distance since my eldest son now lives in Queensland,” she said.
“It’s to share some information that I wish I had known way back then.
“The aim is to simplify and demystify this challenging and rewarding time.
“Based on current research and many years of experience, you will find answers to the usual concerns about adjusting to parenting, the importance of your relationship, breastfeeding, sleep and settling, nutrition, and your baby’s development and play.
A longtime advocate of health education and promotion, she hoped the book would help to debunk old wives’ tales and misinformation.
“It’s about encouragement and finding joy in parenting,” she said.
“I think it would make a perfect gift.”
She had some assistance from friends and colleagues with the book, and said Peta Lemmes was a “wonderful” help with the book’s design.
One hundred copies have been printed and the books are available from local bookshops, with a copy donated to the Margaret River Library.
People can also phone Ms Robertson on 9758 8664 and leave a message–the price of $19.95 includes postage and packaging.
All profits go to children’s protection organisation Bravehearts.
Ms Robertson is now thinking of writing more books in future about toddlers.
“I feel very blessed that I love my job and remain passionate about it,” she said.
